A few weeks ago, before we moved, we heard the tornado sirens wailing at about 12:30 in the morning. Those weather people are always extra protective of big cities so I was tempted just to go back to bed, but reason and logic (also named Michael) convinced me otherwise. Luckily, I had just cleared a space free of boxes in the basement and the air mattress wasn't packed yet. We get the kids out of their quiet, sound slumber and we all bedded down in the basement.
Here's the funny part. Jacob was absolutely terrified (no, that's not the funny part) and Rachel couldn't get enough of it. It was quite a lightening show and the power even went out for about 15 minutes. Jacob layed on his tummy almost the whole time, afraid to watch. We got him laughing a little bit which saved us but the next few nights he was seriously afraid the thunderstorms would come back and wouldn't go to sleep.
Rachel, on the other hand, thought this was a high adventure. She was wide awake and kept pointing to us all saying "mommy", "daddy", "Jacob" (well, she can't SAY Jacob so we get to say it for her) and then she'd point out of our little basement window and we'd inform her (time and again) that it was lightening. She kept at it vigilantly for the whole hour and a half we were downstairs. Despite all the fun, Rachel was happy to get back into her crib and promptly fell back asleep.
I never would have imagined our kids would be so different. It's so much fun to watch the similarities and differences and watch those two interact together. More often than not they butt heads but there's some good floor-rolling and crib-laughing that goes on too! (you know, crib laughing, where they wake each other up in the morning and spend 15 minutes laughing at each other).

oh i know the crib laughing that happens every night now, espeically since it doesn't get dark till late so there's plenty of time to play.
glad the move went well
Katie....i can totally picture your kids laughing at each other in the cribs. Oh the joys of motherhood. I miss you! So glad your move went well....we're thinking of you all. Love ya! Carol and Mike too
When I lived in Minnesota, we would get tornados all the time. I would take the kids and hide in the only bathroom with no windows, and pull out the German war helmet from under the sink and sit there with the helmet on my head (yeah, the kids didn't have anything for their heads) until the storm would blow over. The joys of being a nanny.
I guess we have missed some serious storms since we left! Scary!
