Jacob's Birthday

Yes, it's true. Jacob is finally 3 years old. I have a hard time believing that we've already had Jacob for 3 years. On the other hand, have we really only had Jacob for 3 years? It seems like he's always been a part of our family!

As a family birthday present we took Jacob to the zoo for the membership preview night of their "wild lights" display. The main reason we went was because they had a model train display. The weather just happened to drop 20 degrees that day and it was COLD! In fact, it snowed as we left. But we all bundled up, braved the weather and enjoyed the trains.


There were Zoo trains, big black engines, big blue engines, tunnels, train whistles and all sorts of fun things to look at.

Jacob was even more thrilled when he found out he could actually CONTROL a train! You should have seen his smile when he discovered the power he held in his hand. When we finally reached the end of the display, we turned around and got back in line again. We finally had to pry Jacob away so we could go put Rachel to bed!



The Christmas lights were beautiful. I'm a little bit of a scrooge and don't like to mix Christmas before Thanksgiving, but the lights were amazing (they reminded us of temple lights) and Jacob is already excited about Christmas trees and Santa Claus.

Jacob was sick on Friday (his birthday) so we didn't get to do a lot of fun things like I was planning. He didn't eat any german pancakes that I made for breakfast and I had to force him to eat his pizza for dinner. We went to the doctor where he vehemently avoided the scale but was somewhat appeased when the sweetest nurse ever gave him a happy birthday sucker. After dinner we had Jacob's train cake and ice cream and opened presents. We were looking for ease this year with cake decorating so we got store bought frosting and food coloring markers. But hey. So what if the trees were saggy and the train tracks weren't straight. It had TRAINS on it! That's all that mattered.

Jacob scarfed all of his ice cream down before we could even dish ours up.

He mostly played in his cake. It wasn't until 3 days later that we convinced him to eat some. We just shook our heads when he said "it's yummy!" There's a surprise. In this picture he was making a "pokestack" for his blue Big Black Engine.

Jacob was pretty excited to open presents. Christmas is going to be a lot of fun this year. He got a cool Elmo backpack with card games and a Transformer car that is too complicated for even mommy to put together.


We had to postpone Jacob's birthday party with his friends because he was really miserable that day but we'll have that this week. He's pretty excited for it ....two words: Train Pinata.
